Großschweidnitz (dpa / sn) - memory of «euthanasia» victims: the pathology building of the former sanatorium in Großschweidnitz (district of Görlitz) is to be renovated for more than two million euros.

The aim is to create a place of remembrance and information about the National Socialist "euthanasia".

“The aim is to open the memorial in 2022,” said Mayor Jons Anders (non-party).

In addition to the renovation of the building, a new building is also to be built.

The renovation is already being carried out under the umbrella of the Saxon Memorials Foundation.

At the end of 2020, the Board of Trustees decided to sponsor the memorial.

With the Pirna-Sonnenstein Memorial, a professional association on the subject of euthanasia is to be established.

In Großschweidnitz, more than 5,700 people died between 1939 and 1945 as a result of overdosed medication, systematic malnutrition and insufficient medical and nursing care.

The sanatorium and nursing home for the mentally ill became a place of Nazi extermination policy.
