At no time during the five previous years has the number of drowning alarms exceeded 80 to the number in February.

This year, they landed on as many as 147 pieces.

The explanation for the many alarms, which should not be confused with actual drownings, is believed to be that some cold winter months led to more ice-covered water than usual in the western and southern parts of the country.

- We think that there are many people who are a little unfamiliar who have been out on the ice and then the deterioration has happened very quickly in recent weeks, says Göran Bertilsson.

Västra Götaland and Skåne

A number of counties stand out in the statistics.

In Västra Götaland, SOS alarm received 26 drowning alarms during the month of February.

There, the number is usually less than 10 per year.

In Skåne, 20 drowning alarms were received - here they have commuted between 5 and 7 in the last five years.

Dalarna has also had an unusual number of drowning alarms compared with previous years.

Most alarms, 33, were received in Stockholm.

This is also an increase, but not as significant as in the above counties.

The trend can continue

Göran Bertilsson says that there is a risk that the gloomy statistics will continue for some time into March.

- In recent days, we have seen that there are many drowning accidents even further north.

And now comes a very rapid weather change that causes the ice to melt throughout Sweden.
