Mainz (dpa / lrs) - The hairdressers in Rhineland-Palatinate gave their customers the first haircuts after a long shutdown on Monday.

The first hairstyles were a "hairy story" because the hair of the customers had become very long during the lockdown, said the Mainz hairdresser Gerino Barba on Monday the German press agency.

The first appointment in his salon was a man's haircut at 7:30 a.m.

Barba, who employs six people, was very happy about the openings.

"This is absolutely awesome," he said, "I'm a hairdresser with heart and soul."

He expects many appointments in the coming weeks, and overtime has already been planned in his salon.

"Everyone is happy to be able to work again," said Christian Weirich, spokesman for the State Association of Hairdressers and Cosmetics Rhineland.

The mood among colleagues was generally good, he reported.

Many have used the time in the past few days to make appointments and are well prepared for a possible rush.

However, one cannot process the large number of appointment requests in a few days.

The industry is hoping that after a brief rush, the salons will continue to be used as normal for the rest of the year.

In addition to hairdressers, flower shops, driving schools, pedicure providers and animal parks in Rhineland-Palatinate also reopened on Monday.

Garden and hardware stores are allowed to sell a «garden center-typical range», but only outside.

One-to-one tuition in music schools is also possible again - apart from singing and playing wind instruments.

Ordered goods can no longer only be picked up, but - under strict conditions - also tried on in the shop.

With “appointment shopping”, however, only one household is allowed to enter the shop.
