Leverkusen (AP) - For right back Timothy Fosu-Mensah from Bundesliga soccer club Bayer Leverkusen, the season ended prematurely.

As feared, the 23-year-old Dutchman suffered a rupture of the anterior right cruciate ligament in the game against SC Freiburg on Sunday (1: 2).

The club announced on Monday.

Fosu-Mensah had only moved from Manchester United to Leverkusen in the winter and was in the problem position on the right back five times in a row in the Bundesliga starting line-up.

Santiago Arias, on loan from Atlético Madrid in the summer, is still out due to a broken fibula, and Lars Bender is also unavailable due to a meniscus injury.

So coach Peter Bosz has to fall back on Mitchell Weiser, who was hardly considered recently, or the trained central defender Aleksandar Dragovic.

Fosu-Mensah suffered a cruciate ligament injury in April 2019.

But this time it's the other knee.

"It is a hard blow for Timothy," said sports director Simon Rolfes: "We will support him as much as we can so that he emerges stronger from this difficult situation."
