Duisburg (dpa) - With a brazen scam, a con artist stole 1,900 euros from a 95-year-old woman from Duisburg.

As a fake postman, he rang the senior citizen's doorbell last Friday to hand over an alleged letter from the vaccination center, the police said on Monday.

He had requested that she pay a cash on delivery fee of 1.90 euros beforehand with her EC card - which she did because she was worried about her vaccination appointment booked online.

Nevertheless, the 95-year-old became suspicious afterwards.

When she inquired at her bank, instead of the alleged fee of 1.90 euros, an amount of 1900 euros was reserved for debiting.

The bank tried to stop the debiting, said a Duisburg police spokeswoman on Monday.

"But it was too late, the money is gone."

The police now want to determine where the money went to track down the perpetrator.
