Cottbus (dpa / bb) - That it could go so fast, the responsible demolition master Mario Büchner had not expected: He and his team from the ordnance disposal service rendered a World War II bomb in Cottbus harmless within a short time on Monday.

«It went better than expected.

The defusing only lasted about half an hour, ”said Büchner, according to the city.

The 50-kilo bomb had been badly attacked after 75 years.

The dud from World War II was reportedly defused and the detonator detonated in an area outside the city center.

The German-style bomb with a Russian detonator was discovered during construction work last Wednesday - a so-called booty bomb, as Büchner explained.

It was a German explosive device that was captured and fitted with a new detonator.

The blocking circle in a radius of 300 meters has been removed.

Around 3700 people who had to leave the area around the site in Virchowstrasse on Monday morning were able to return to their homes and workplaces.

The city had made three sports halls available for people who needed alternative accommodation.

The attendance to the gym of the Max-Steenbeck-Gymnasium was therefore large.

A gym of the Ludwig-Leichhardt-Gymnasium was therefore also available.

About 120 people gathered in these two halls.

A rescue bus from the fire brigade, rescue service and vehicles from Cottbusverkehr brought people with limited mobility to an emergency shelter.

In addition, 14 people who are in quarantine due to Corona were placed in separate accommodation in the town hall by the fire brigade.

The technical town hall, the Spree-Galerie shopping center, the town hall, parts of the campus of the Brandenburg Technical University (BTU), a daycare center, a primary school and an upper school center were affected by the evacuation.

During the evacuation, an accident with a slightly injured person caused a little excitement for a short time.

For an as yet unexplained cause, the driver collided with a tram, the police said.

According to the Lausitz control center, the fire brigade was on site to clean up spilled fuel.

The road had to be temporarily closed for rescue and recovery work.
