Munich (dpa / lby) - Bavaria's building minister Kerstin Schreyer (CSU) calls for funds from the Federal Ministry of Education to promote student dormitories.

The building ministry announced on Sunday that the number of students in the Free State is growing.

In 2019, the federal government cut its allocations to the federal states for housing construction from 1.5 billion euros per year to one billion euros.

Federal financial aid for social housing should also be used for the construction of student dormitories.

Due to the decrease of 500 million euros compared to the years 2017 to 2019, Schreyer is demanding that Federal Education Minister Anja Karliczek (CDU) make an independent financial contribution from the federal government in the creation of housing for students.

Finding an apartment is difficult for students, and this will be exacerbated by the loss of part-time jobs due to the corona pandemic, said Schreyer.

Financial means of social housing promotion would be “used for the still high demand for affordable housing for low-income families, older people and other needy people”.

Here “no funds could be withdrawn for the construction of student dormitories”.

Compared to the previous year, 406,000 students are currently enrolled at Bavaria's universities, which corresponds to an increase of 3.1 percent.

Student unions as well as church and private organizations offer around 38,000 places to live in the Free State.
