Naypydaw (dpa) - In Myanmar, according to reports from local media and eyewitnesses, several people were killed, injured and arrested during nationwide protests against the military coup.

In the two largest cities, Rangoon and Mandalay, as well as in Dawei and Bago, at least nine people are said to have died as a result of police violence, the newspaper "The Irrawaddy" reported on Sunday.

Independent verification of the data is not possible.

The police are accused of initially using rubber bullets and tear gas, later using live ammunition against demonstrators.

Protesters are said to have been shot in the head, reported the online portal “Myanmar Now”.

CNN spoke of the bloodiest day since the February 1st military coup.

The protests are directed against the military.

In pictures distributed by "Frontier Myanmar", protesters can be seen who have erected barricades in downtown Yangon.

Some carry signs that read: “Protect the people.

Protect democracy ».

The Canadian embassy on site was appalled at the increasing violence against "unarmed" demonstrators.

One commemorates the dead and injured who campaigned for "a peaceful return to a democratic government in Myanmar," said a message from the embassy on Facebook.

On February 1, the military in Myanmar had put up against Prime Minister Aung San Suu Kyi.

The 75-year-old won the parliamentary elections in November by a clear margin.

Since the coup, there have been repeated mass protests in Myanmar.

The demonstrators are demanding the release of the appointed head of government and the reinstatement of her civilian government.

The military has recently cracked down on the resistance movement with increasing severity.
