At 5.17 a.m. on Friday morning, Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer arrived in Mazar-i-Scharif.

The visit of the CDU politician to the military camp in northern Afghanistan was described by the Defense Ministry as a “surprise visit”.

The cabinet decided this week to extend the mandate, which ran until the end of March, by ten months.

However, through their propaganda, the Taliban let it be known that they viewed a prolonged presence of NATO troops as a breach of treaty that could have “serious consequences” up to a “great war”.

Instead, Kramp-Karrenbauer spoke of “prospects” - and considers it opportune not to talk about the real problems on site.
