The Abu Dhabi Health Services Company, "SEHA", launched the "Newborn Monitor at Home" program, targeting children with heart defects, to help their families maintain their safety.

The program, which began in Sheikh Khalifa Medical City, is currently monitoring 30 children, three of whom are in critical condition.

Children, who are born with the most severe and dangerous types of heart anomalies, such as hypoplastic left heart syndrome, and other situations in which only one side of the heart works, undergoes an open-heart operation in the first days of their lives, usually, followed by heart surgery six months after the operation First.

Dr. Anwar Salam, Executive Director of Medical Affairs at the "SEHA" company, confirmed that "children face higher risks of death during the interval between stages, due to the increase in the number of injuries that an abnormally developing heart may suffer, especially colds, fever or Drought".

"The congenital heart disease team for children provides the necessary care for about 50 to 60 children who suffer from these conditions annually, and a medical advisor provides assistance to the parents during the waiting period to monitor the condition of their children, and to ensure timely medical intervention if necessary," he said.

"The time between the two operations, known as the period between stages, exposes children to an increased risk of death, as nearly 20% of them die of complex heart diseases at home while they are awaiting the second surgery," he said.

For her part, consultant pediatric cardiology, Dr. Victoria Shuard, said that the program team monitors the health of the infant from the moment he completes the first open heart surgery until the second operation.

She emphasized guiding the family on how to care for their child before leaving the hospital, in addition to educating their members about the warning signs of deterioration.

She stated that about 60 children need an open-heart follow-up after about six months, out of the approximately 350 corrective heart surgeries that are performed in Sheikh Khalifa Medical City for Children annually.

She emphasized that the program is currently monitoring the case of 30 children registered for home monitoring, the condition of three of them is critical, and urgent intervention has been arranged for them through the program.
