The strategy is clear: prohibit the consumption of alcohol in the street to ensure compliance with barrier gestures and slow the spread of Covid-19.

Since Tuesday, it is indeed forbidden to drink rue de Buci, in the 6th arrondissement of Paris, and place de la Contrescarpe, in the 5th arrondissement, between 11 am and 6 pm.

A measure taken after the observation of gatherings in favor of sunny days.

A well-respected ban

"The police were obviously present on the ground to ensure its proper application, and there were very few verbalizations."

But a few streets further on, Parisians were enjoying the last rays of the sun on Friday evening before curfew, beer in hand.

Rue Mouffetard for example, an artery that crosses the Place de la Contrescarpe, Vincent and Arnaud stand in front of the entrance to a car park, cup in hand.

"We walked 150 yards with our pint."

The two thirties would however have preferred a more comfortable solution.

Reinforced police system

A few hundred yards away on the banks of the Seine, several groups of students were sipping a beer with friends after class.

If they are in their right, especially as the small groups were very spaced on the quays, these students are monitored by the police.

"This weekend, we will deploy 3,600 police and gendarmes in all sectors of the capital, both to check that the ban on alcohol consumption is respected in the sectors concerned, but also to ensure that the rules are respected. sanitary facilities, ”says Laetitia Vallar.

Vigilance extended to the entire capital, while the latter could experience strict confinement on the weekend from March 6, as Prime Minister Jean Castex indicated on Thursday during his press conference.

"We will be present on all the sites where regroupings which are related to alcohol consumption could take place", abounds the spokesperson of the Prefecture of Police of Paris.

And to warn that according to "findings that will be made during the weekend", the ban on alcohol consumption could be extended to new arteries in the capital.
