The state of Texas was hit last week by temperatures down to -15 degrees and it affected both humans and animals.

Along the beaches, cold-paralyzed turtles were washed up and everything from volunteers to the coast guard were helped to take care of the animals.

Once the turtles have been rescued, taken care of and warmed up, they can now return to their home in the sea.

When the temperature in the sea drops below 10 degrees, some turtle species may lose the ability to move.

They are awake but paralyzed and often lead to the animals dying when they either drown or fall victim to predators.

According to the news agency AP, more than 8,000 turtles were found that were paralyzed by cold.

This is the most ever since measurements began in 1980. And almost twice as many as the previous record in Florida in 2010 when 4,613 turtles were found.

Initial figures say that more than half of the turtles were found alive.
