Munich (dpa / lby) - After weeks of start-up difficulties due to a lack of vaccine, the Bavarian vaccination campaign should run at full speed in the coming weeks.

The 100 Bavarian vaccination centers are to more than double their capacity from April to 111,000 vaccinations per day, as Health Minister Klaus Holetschek (CSU) announced.

That would mean a million vaccinations every nine days, and an arithmetical average of 1110 vaccinations per day per vaccination center.

"Our goal is to vaccinate as many people as possible as quickly as possible," said a ministry spokesman at the weekend.

Healthcare professionals consider the rapid mass vaccinations planned by Holetschek to be quite feasible.

In the state medical association, however, there are doubts whether this can be managed in the vaccination centers alone.

"At the latest, when enough vaccine is available in the foreseeable future, a nationwide vaccination can only be carried out by the practices of the resident doctors and primarily by the family doctor colleagues," said a spokesman for the Bavarian State Medical Association.

But whether and when Bavaria's general practitioners may also vaccinate in their practices is open.

There are currently only pilot projects.

"For the use of general practitioners within the framework of standard care, a corresponding regulation within the framework of the national vaccination strategy is required," said the ministry spokesman.

"At the moment, no forecasts can be made about this."

The Bavarian Hospital Society welcomes the health minister's plans: "I think it's good that Minister Holetschek has announced the vaccine turbo," says managing director Roland Engehausen.

"In a few weeks we will have so much vaccine that we will have to see how we can vaccinate everything properly and properly."

In the past few weeks, the discussion has been shaped by the people who advocate vaccination - "this will probably soon no longer have to play a role".

According to Engehhausen, the hospitals will also be ready to provide support as soon as possible.

According to figures from the Ministry of Health, there had been 995 312 vaccinations in Bavaria from the start of vaccination on December 27th to Friday, of which 335 433 were second vaccinations.

In the past few days the pace has increased significantly compared to the slow start: According to figures from the ministry, almost 100,000 vaccinations were reported from Tuesday to Friday alone.

Now Holetschek is aiming for a further multiplication with its “vaccine turbo”.

The central question will be whether reliably sufficient quantities of vaccine will arrive in Bavaria.

"We do not have long-term figures until autumn," said a ministry spokesman.

"Around 1.8 million vaccine doses are expected for Bavaria by April."

Almost 1.3 million cans have been delivered so far, a large number of which have not yet been used.

So far, the EU, including Bavaria, is still much slower than Great Britain when it comes to vaccinations: In the UK, 28.5 vaccine doses per 100 inhabitants were administered by Wednesday, and only 6.7 in the EU.
