- It has had a very tough road, but thanks to the ongoing rescue work, kakapo is now hopefully on its way back, says Andreas Nord, researcher at Evolutionary Ecology.

The world-unique bird, which is the world's only parrot that cannot fly, lives in isolation on a number of smaller islands in New Zealand.

The animal is still very rare and still threatened with extinction, but hard work is being done to save the species.

- Today we have just over 200 parrots left.

The future for kakapo looks bright, says researcher Andreas Nord.

The goal: Get rid of all predators

The main reason why the owl parrot is threatened with extinction is that the predators that live on the islands eat kakapo chicks and kakapo eggs.

The predators do not belong to the natural fauna of New Zealand and came there together with the first Europeans several hundred years ago.

New Zealand now has a plan to get rid of all predators until the year 2050, to save the parrots.

- Cats, rats, ferrets are examples of some animals that love to eat kakapo.

To preserve biodiversity, New Zealand aims to get rid of the harmful predators, says Andreas Nord.
