The warm spring weather has made the ice treacherous and the risk of accidents is currently great.

In recent days, several severe ice accidents have occurred in several places.

Just on Saturday, several people walked through the ice in Ekolsundsviken in Enköping.

One person died and several were injured.

More drowning accidents than usual

The rescue service, the Police, the Uppsala Region and the Stockholm Region as well as the county administrative boards in Uppsala and Stockholm County are now issuing a warning for very weak ice and urging the public not to go out on ice-covered lakes and watercourses.

The National Ice Safety Council also urges the public not to go out on the ice at all.

SOS Alarm also reports a sharp increase in the number of drowning alarms so far this year, where most of the alarms concern ice accidents.

- It confirms the feeling we had about increased activity and a more active outdoor life.

If you have an increased exposure, you also get an increased risk picture, says Mikael Olausson from the Ice Safety Council.

"Lack of sufficient knowledge"

Between 1 and 21 February this year, SOS Alarm handled 117 drowning cases, which can be compared with 37 alarms during the same period in 2020. In January, the increase was not as dramatic but still large compared to last year.

But the number of fatalities is significantly lower.

According to the Swedish Lifesaving Society's preliminary statistics, three people died in January.

- Nice ice and beautiful weather makes many people go out.

However, there is a lack of sufficient knowledge about what to think about when you are out on the ice and the accident has occurred.

It has really been noticed in our statistics, says Göran Bertilsson, fire engineer at SOS Alarm to SVT News.
