Hanover / Wolfsburg (dpa) - The planned ID.Buzz electric bus for light VW commercial vehicles (VWN) is to be the first group model to be equipped for autonomous driving.

The brand announced that the supervisory board approved the corresponding funds for the further development of the technology at its meeting on Friday.

The fully electric "Bulli" itself is scheduled to start in 2022 according to the current plan.

The Hanover-based company has now announced that “autonomous systems for traffic use” will be introduced from 2025 onwards.

Field trials are scheduled to begin this year.

When it comes to autonomous driving, Volkswagen is working with the US company Argo AI, which specializes in artificial intelligence.

Ford has also invested there, and both partners want to share the development costs for light e-commercial vehicles.

For example, the use of self-driving systems for collective shuttles and driving services is being targeted, similar to what the VW subsidiary Moia is offering today.

“In the middle of this decade, our customers will be able to have autonomous vehicles take them to their respective destination in selected cities,” announced the manager Christian Senger.
