• Covid. Flamenco tablaos are dying and asking for help: "The situation is dramatic"

  • Coronavirus Casa Patas, first of the flamenco tablaos in Madrid that closes due to the lack of tourists

The pandemic has dealt another blow to the world of flamenco.

The Villa Rosa tablao

will close its doors forever next week after a year without income and an ERTE.

Jonatan Miró, bailaor and artistic director of the emblematic venue in the Plaza de Santa Ana, has communicated through his social networks the news of the definitive closure of Villa Rosa.

The promoter has prepared a final function for Thursday, March 4, where they will remember all the stars who have been part of their history.

The tablao Villa Rosa was

founded in 1911 by two picadores

.

Its hallmark is its Andalusian decoration, with a façade of tiles and an interior with rooms decorated with arches and inspired by the Alhambra in Granada.

The polychrome tiles are from the best potters in Madrid and Andalusia and recreate bullfighting and flamenco scenes.

Before Villa Rosa,

Casa Patas and Café de Chinitas

had also lowered the curtain forever

.

Given the seriousness of the situation, the tablaos got together and created last year the National Association of Flamenco Tablaos of Spain to ask for help.

They demanded the elaboration of a subsidy plan that included the extension of the ERTE and a line of subsidies to be able to cover the high monthly fixed costs.

Last June, the delegate for Culture of the Madrid City Council, Andrea Levy, met with the Madrid Flamenco Tablaos Association to address the situation in the sector.

The flamenco businesses asked to be equated with the hotel industry to have terraces and extend their hours.

The Madrid City Council raised the option of declaring them to be of general interest to the city and equating them to restaurants while international tourism, the main source of income for this business, recovers.
