Bonn (dpa) - A 51-year-old had introduced himself as a pastor in a Bonn clinic and thus gained the trust of an elderly patient whom he met in the hospital chapel.

In the end, the man had ripped off the senior's family for 48,650 euros.

Now the Bonn district court has sentenced the false clergyman to four years and two months in prison for commercial fraud, as a court spokeswoman announced on Friday.

The sentence also includes another conviction by the Dresden District Court for ten other fraudulent acts.

In the Bonn case, the defendant had led the 63-year-old son of the senior to believe that he was a Swiss citizen, had lost his papers and had no chance of getting any money.

The son then gave him the money in good faith.

It was agreed by contract that the alleged priest should repay the sum within three months.

However, that did not happen.

The accused has already been behind bars as a notorious fraudster for 25 years.

During the trial he had stated that he had not received any “moral framework” from traumatic experiences as a child in an orphanage in the former GDR.

In stressful situations he can no longer control his tendency to cheat.
