Wiesbaden (dpa / lhe) - In the Corona year 2020, significantly more citizens in Hesse addressed their concerns directly to the state parliament than in the year before.

The number of petitions rose by more than half to 1421, as can be seen from the annual report of the Petitions Committee in Wiesbaden.

As chairman Manuela Strube (SPD) reported, the number of entries has increased significantly, especially when Hessen had adopted new measures in the fight against the pandemic.

Among other things, the concerns revolved around the opening of churches, schools or daycare centers despite Corona.

962 petitions were finally dealt with in 2020.

In 17 percent of the cases, the applicants were successful or partially successful, explained Strube.

A good third of the applications were negative, almost half were neutral.

This means, for example, that the concerns have been forwarded to another location.

The percentage of petitions on the right of residence fell significantly in 2020 compared to the previous year from around a quarter to a good twelve percent.

One of the reasons Strube named the lack of flight connections for deportations due to the corona.

A total of 25 collective petitions with a larger number of supporters were received by the committee last year.

Most of the signatories asked for the files on the NSU terror cell "National Socialist Underground" to be released - more than 67,200 people had approved this request.

They justified their request by stating that the content was of interest to all citizens.

The final decision of the Petitions Committee is still pending.

Around 40,500 signatories advocated a ban on firecrackers near riding stables and paddocks.

Hesse will work with the other federal states to reform the regulations for New Year's Eve fireworks so that local bans are made easier, said Strube.

The corona pandemic presented the petitions committee with considerable challenges.

After all, constant contact and exchange with citizens is the basis of the work, explained the chairwoman.

Under Corona requirements, there were, among other things, 14 citizen consultation hours and six on-site appointments.
