The Norwegian Jarl Magnus Riiber is not only the defending champion, but also the top favorite.
After the ski jumping sub-discipline, the 23-year-old jumping specialist usually has so much head start that he can no longer be caught on the trail.
But the German team of national coach Hermann Weinbuch is ambitious in the start of the World Cup.
The three Olympic champions Vinzenz Geiger, Eric Frenzel and Fabian Rießle are among the favorites in the competition after the latest hill improvements.

After the disappointing start in the individual on the normal hill, the German ski jumpers have to improve in the team competition in order to have a chance of a medal.
"We have to flip the switch quickly," said national coach Andreas Bauer.
At the beginning, Katharina Althaus was only tenth as the best German on Thursday.
It seems utopian that a title defense will work out.
Austria, Norway and Slovenia are the big favorites.

Now things are getting serious for Markus Eisenbichler and Karl Geiger too.
The hopefuls of the German ski jumpers measure themselves against the international competition on Friday evening on the normal hill on the Schattenberg in the qualification.
Can you put a warning sign before the first World Cup competition on Saturday?
In training Eisenbichler had already indicated with a strong jump that he could be expected.

11.45 a.m.: Women's departure (Eurosport 2)
After the sensational silver medal at the World Championships, Kira Weidle wants to confirm her form in the World Cup.
In Val di Fassa, the downhill run that was canceled in Garmisch-Partenkirchen will be rescheduled - so, in purely formal terms, the event is a bit of a home race for the Starnberg woman.
Weidle was already one of the fastest in training in the Dolomites.
The second descent will follow on Saturday - this time the replacement for the race actually planned in China.
A Super-G on Sunday rounds off the speed weekend.
