Linz am Rhein (dpa) - The world-famous sandal manufacturer Birkenstock is majority-owned by the American-French holding company L Catterton and the family holding Financière Agache.

"The parties have agreed not to disclose the details of the agreement," announced the company with its headquarters in Linz am Rhein in Rhineland-Palatinate on Friday.

The transaction is subject to the approval of the relevant competition authorities.

For Birkenstock, the partnership is "the next logical step to continue to grow strongly in future markets such as China and India".

The heirs Christian and Alex Birkenstock declared, according to the announcement: «For the next 250 years we need partners with the same strategic and long-term vision as that of the Birkenstock family.

We have found these partners in L Catterton and Financière Agache. »

The Birkenstock brand started in 1774.
