Hanover (dpa / lni) - In Hanover, a dispute has broken out over the renewal of the Südschnellweg, one of the expressways around the city center.

Hanover's Lord Mayor Belit Onay (Greens) called in a letter to Federal Transport Minister Andreas Scheuer (CSU) to review the federal government's previous plans, reported the “Hannoversche Allgemeine Zeitung” (Friday).

There is a dispute because the route in the planned new construction is to be widened from 14.50 to around 25 meters.

The Südschnellweg runs through the southern districts of Hanover and partly through the Leinemasch recreation area.

The state road construction authority had applied the guidelines for the construction of motorways in their planning, because the southern expressway is to be assessed as a city motorway from the point of view of the planners, as the newspaper reported.

He thinks that's wrong, Onay told the paper.

"If we take the traffic turnaround seriously - which is also Mr. Scheuer's concern over and over again - then we have to ask fundamental questions and adapt the guidelines."

Instead of additional areas for car traffic, a parallel cycle path through the Masch must be planned.

According to the report, the federal government is building the southern expressway in Hanover for at least 360 million euros because four bridges are in disrepair.

Numerous environmental and climate groups are protesting against the previous planning.
