Oberstdorf (dpa) - Eric Frenzel demonstratively hung his head, Katharina Althaus had to watch the others partying in her ski jumping living room.

Even after the second day of the Nordic Home World Championships in Oberstdorf, the flying artists and cross-country skiing aces from Germany are still waiting for the first medal.

The athletes of the German Ski Association did not make it onto the podium in five decisions.

The pressure increases over the weekend.

The combined riders Eric Frenzel and Fabian Rießle were close in the ten kilometer race on Friday, but in the end did not get past fourth and sixth.

The ski jumping quartet around local hero Althaus only finished fifth in the team competition as defending champions.

"The chance was there," said combined national coach Hermann Weinbuch after the thrilling race of his protégés.

When asked about a possible disappointment, the 60-year-old responded defiantly: “We have no wound.

We actually did a lot right, but it has to work for you too. "

This did not happen.

Frenzel, the record champion at world championships with seven titles, was only a few seconds short of a medal.

"It was a good day in itself when you are five seconds behind gold," said the 32-year-old.

"That is that little bit that we have been looking for for a long time."

At the same time, he encouraged himself: "For my part, I have gained self-confidence."

Instead, Norwegian Jarl Magnus Riiber was crowned world champion with provocative ease.

«We had to do a lot of leadership work.

Those who are on the podium have been hiding the whole ten kilometers », Weinbuch analyzed with resentment, also referring to Riiber.

The 23-year-old defending champion initially let the pursuers approach the ten kilometers in the Allgäu and then demonstrated in the demanding final why he is currently the head of the combined athletes.

But also the Finn Ilkka Herola and Norway's Jens Luuras Oftebro, who won silver and bronze, were too strong this time.

For co-favorites Vinzenz Geiger (14th place) and Johannes Rydzek (28th place) things went only moderately after mixed jumps.

Both men from Oberstdorf tried to make up the gap of over a minute on the trail right from the start.

At first it worked perfectly, then both collapsed.

While the hope of the combined athletes for precious metal in further races is realistic, at least one single title of the jumpers at the large hill premiere on Wednesday would be a small sensation.

The athletes headed by national coach Andreas Bauer have no chance against the absolute top of the world.

“Of course it's a shame if you don't jump on the podium at the home World Cup,” said Althaus.

In the quartet with Juliane Seyfarth, Anna Rupprecht and Luisa Görlich she was still the best German on the Schattenberg.

Even Althaus could not prevent the disappointing result with jumps on 94 and 94.5 meters.

Austria won gold this time, ahead of Slovenia and Norway.

The deficit of the German team on the podium was enormous.

“The three big ones at the front are very well positioned in terms of breadth and quality.

Nobody is weak at the moment, ”said Bauer on ARD.

On the weekend high above the village, it continues non-stop.

On this Saturday, the men will show their skills in the individual on the normal hill (4.30 p.m. / ARD and Eurosport), and the combined women will celebrate their World Cup premiere.

The skiathlon races are on the program in the cross-country stadium.
