Bonn (dpa) - Deutsche Telekom wants to make significant progress this year with the expansion of fiber optics.

The Bonn-based group also relies on cooperations - the company announced on Thursday that it was working with the regional provider NetCologne.

Both companies want to invest in the fast data transmission network in the coming years and give each other access.

At today's balance sheet press conference, Telekom boss Tim Höttges wants to comment on the fiber optic plans for 2021 and the time thereafter.

Last year, Höttges had set the goal that by 2030 all households in Germany should have their own “real” fiber optic connection - that is, to the houses or apartments and not just to the distribution box on the street.

This is intended as a joint effort by the industry.

The new connections are to come from Telekom and other companies.

The proportion of fiber optics on all Telekom Internet lines is still not that great.

In the past few years, the group has focused primarily on optimizing its copper telephone lines used for the Internet with “super vectoring”.

Compared to real fiber optic connections, the download speed of these lines is not really great according to the name.

The improved VDSL lines are only intended to be a temporary solution until pure fiber optics can be offered.

Höttges should be satisfied with the presentation of the annual figures.

The group may have made a three-digit billion euro turnover for the first time.

In the first three quarters of 2020, Telekom's revenue climbed 24 percent to EUR 73.4 billion.

That was largely due to the takeover of US competitor Sprint.

The American subsidiary T-Mobile US announced its figures for 2020 at the beginning of February, i.e. also for the fourth quarter.

It recently grew strongly in sales, but profit stagnated.
