The National Assembly held a plenary meeting on the afternoon of the 26th and decided on amendment to the Act on Special Cases for the Punishment of Child Abuse Crimes.

The revised bill created a new crime of child abuse and murder, requiring the death penalty, life imprisonment, or imprisonment for more than 7 years.

According to the criminal law, the punishment is heavier than the crime of murder (imprisonment for more than 5 years).

In addition, the appointment of a public defense attorney and an assistant public election has been made mandatory for victims of child abuse crime cases.

Last month, the National Assembly passed an amendment to the Act on Special Cases for Punishment of Child Abuse Crimes, called the'Jung In Yi Act'.

At the time, public opinion to raise the court sentence for child abuse crimes was strong, but the discussion could not continue due to concerns about side effects.

The ruling and opposition parties later resumed consultations to raise the level of punishment by applying the crime of murder if they intentionally abused a child and resulted in death without raising the sentence of the existing child abuse and death penalty.
