Bayreuth (dpa / lby) - The avian influenza virus has been detected in a gray goose that has died in the Cham district.

In a larger section of the Regental from Cham to Roding, compulsory housing for domestic poultry had been ordered, the district office announced on Friday evening.

A corresponding general decree was issued, which will come into force on Saturday.

It applies to commercial poultry farmers as well as to hobby breeders and private individuals who keep poultry.

The infectious disease has appeared in Bavaria since November.

There have recently been cases in the districts of Starnberg, Passau, Bayreuth, Haßberge, Landsberg am Lech, Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen, Neuburg-Schrobenhausen and Erlangen-Höchstatt.

The animal disease occurs mainly in water birds.

The highest incidence and death rates are observed in chickens and turkeys - in some cases up to 100 percent.

Avian influenza is a notifiable animal disease and is therefore controlled by the state.
