Mainz (dpa / lrs) - In the opinion of the Rhineland-Palatinate State Association in the German Library Association (dbv), libraries must be taken into account when opening the lockdown.

"Libraries are among the most important public institutions," said the chairman of the dbv regional association, Giorgina Kazungu-Haß, on Friday in Mainz.

After the first lockdown in spring 2020, libraries were among the first to be allowed to reopen their houses.

In the decision of the last federal-state conference in mid-February, libraries were not explicitly named as cultural institutions, said Kazungu-Haß.

With around ten million visits per year, the libraries are among the most important educational, cultural and scientific institutions in the country.

The libraries have developed "reliable protection and hygiene concepts" for their visitors, she emphasized.
