Detmold (dpa / lni) - In 2020, Lower Saxony's youth hostels recorded 65 percent fewer overnight stays than in the previous year.

Above all, school trips, which otherwise made up a large part of the occupancy, were canceled, announced the Lower Saxony state associations of the German Youth Hostel Association (DJH) on Thursday.

The youth hostels on the islands and on the coast were hit a little less hard: they were in relatively high demand during the summer and autumn holidays.

Many hostels in cities remained empty.

Throughout Lower Saxony, the number of guests fell from a good 422,000 to 139,000 (minus 67 percent).

It is already foreseeable that corona aid from the federal and state governments will also be needed in 2021.

In the most populous state of North Rhine-Westphalia, school trips are prohibited until the summer vacation.

In normal years, school classes made up at least 60 percent of the overnight stays between May and June, it said.

“The longer they stay away, the more the situation gets worse”.

It is absolutely clear that school trips and trips can and should only take place if the infection process allows it.

The ministries of culture should not issue hasty bans on school trips, the association demanded.

Hygiene concepts have been tried and proven to be viable.

In the district of Cloppenburg, a hostel at the Thülsfeld dam is currently being used differently - as a vaccination center.
