Renewed UN call to stop violence in Marib

Humanitarian organizations have reported the displacement of at least 8,000 people in the Yemeni governorate of Ma'rib in recent weeks, due to the escalation of hostilities by the Houthi militia, the vast majority of them women and children.

The United Nations News website quoted the spokesman for the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Stephane Dujarric, as saying, “We continue our call for an immediate end to violence in Marib and the rest of the country, and we encourage all parties in Yemen to redouble their efforts to support the work of (UN envoy) Martin Griffiths, in achieving a political solution. And a cease-fire throughout the country as soon as possible ».

Dujarric added that the displacement cases in Marib come to add to the high levels of displacement and the humanitarian needs in that governorate. According to humanitarian agencies, displacement to and within Marib accounted for two-thirds of the total displacement cases in Yemen last year.

"We and our humanitarian partners are increasing support and planning," Dujarric said. "Newly displaced families receive food, hygiene supplies, health care and other assistance, yet an exacerbation of the situation could quickly overwhelm current capabilities and force hundreds of thousands to flee."

Next Monday, the United Nations will hold an event to announce high-level pledges on the humanitarian crisis in Yemen through remote communication technology, with the participation of Sweden and Switzerland.

The United Nations spokesman said that this event is an important opportunity for the international community to support the humanitarian response and show solidarity with the Yemeni people.

"Nearly four billion dollars are needed to provide humanitarian assistance and protection to 16 million people in Yemen in 2021," he said.
