Bergen (dpa / mv) - In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, this year's reet harvest is coming to an end.

For nature conservation reasons, harvesting is only allowed from the beginning of November to the end of February.

That is too short, says thatched roofer Stefan Rolinski, who harvests himself on Rügen.

"We just don't have any more frost in late autumn."

This is what is needed so that the cane is ready for harvest.

It is practically impossible to harvest until mid-January.

Rolinksi therefore demands that the cane mowing be allowed until mid-March.

The reed harvest - the so-called reed mowing - continues to decline in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

According to figures from the Greifswald Moor Centrum, the harvest is no more than a sixth compared to 30 years ago.

According to this, only 15 percent of the pipe used in Germany comes from domestic stocks.

The majority come from southern and eastern Europe or China.

Among other things, conditions and lack of funding made the reed farmers to create.
