Wiesbaden / Halle (dpa / sa) - In the Corona year 2020, fewer people died in traffic in Saxony-Anhalt than in the year before.

123 people were killed on the streets of the country - 14 less than a year earlier, said the Federal Statistical Office in Wiesbaden on Thursday.

Nationwide, 2,724 people died in accidents on the roads, that was 322 fatalities or 10.6 percent less than in 2019. According to the office, the number of road deaths in all of Germany reached the lowest level since the census began more than 60 years ago.

The development is related to a significantly lower volume of traffic in the Corona year, said a spokeswoman for the ADAC.

In addition to reduced rush hour traffic, fewer people went on vacation.

In addition, cars are becoming increasingly safer on average.

The number of injuries in Saxony-Anhalt also fell in 2020 compared to the previous year: The number of seriously injured people fell by around 14 percent to 1970, while the number of slightly injured people fell by 11 percent to around 6,900.
