Berlin (dpa) - After spectacular thefts and attacks on art treasures, the federal government wants to strengthen security in German museums with a five-million-euro special program.

Investments in burglary and theft protection are being funded, as Minister of State for Culture Monika Grütters (CDU) announced on Thursday in Berlin.

In recent years there had been raids in the Green Vault in Dresden and on Berlin's Museum Island.

Serious cases of vandalism have also become known.

The art treasures in German museums deserve the best possible protection against theft, explained Grütters.

“The increasingly brute force and the general staff approach of the perpetrators pose enormous challenges for the cultural institutions.

We want to support them in dealing better with the changed risk situation in the future. "

The funding program is intended for structural, mechanical or electronic safety precautions in nationally important cultural institutions.
