This call comes at a time when health authorities are particularly focused on vaccination campaigns to try to curb the pandemic and are scrutinizing the rise of British and South African variants which raise the specter of new outbreaks of contamination.

The issue of "Covid long" is "a clear priority for the WHO, and of the utmost importance. It must be for all health authorities", insisted Mr. Kluge during a press conference, deploring that these long-term symptoms are too often met with "disbelief or a lack of understanding".

WHO Europe has called on the countries of the area it covers and the European institutions to set up "a common research program", and wants "a regional strategy" in this area.

In the meantime, European Union leaders were due to meet on Thursday afternoon at a virtual summit to try to display a common strategy in the face of the threat of the coronavirus variants, despite uncoordinated traffic restrictions and sharp differences on the future "vaccination passport".

Sierra Leone, a poor country in West Africa, is due to receive 200,000 doses of Sinopharm vaccine from China on Thursday.
