Gelsenkirchen (dpa) - FC Schalke 04 is putting parts of its e-sports commitment to the test.

Economic factors could make it necessary to sell the starting place in the European "League of Legends" league LEC, said Schalke's Chief Gaming Officer Tim Reichert of the German press agency.

Due to the financially difficult situation, the sharp drop in sales as a result of the corona pandemic and the impending relegation, the bottom of the table in the Bundesliga has to save.

Schalke bought the starting place in the LEC in 2019 for eight million euros.

In the meantime, the value could have risen sharply, as Reichert confirmed.

«We have to look: Who is interested and what offers are then on the table?

We will do everything to have a clear overview at the right time and we will make decisions on this basis, ”he said.

A decision should be made by May or June.

Schalke is considered a pioneer in e-sports among the traditional clubs.

In addition to its involvement in “League of Legends”, the club also has e-athletes in other disciplines such as “FIFA” or “Pro Evolution Soccer”.

This engagement would not necessarily end in the event of a sale of the league place, said Reichert.

"The topic is not automatically out of the world on Schalke."
