Regensburg / Kiel (dpa) - The police managed to strike a ring of telephone fraudsters.

Around 100 officials from Lower Bavaria and Schleswig-Holstein searched several apartments of suspected gang fraudsters in the Kiel area on Thursday, according to the police headquarters in Lower Bavaria.

Four men of German and Turkish origin between the ages of 23 and 56 were arrested.

The background is said to be fraud in southern Bavaria.

Accordingly, in August 2020, a then 78-year-old from Geiselhöring (Straubing-Bogen district) fell for fake police officers and lost 70,000 euros to the fraudsters.

These are said to have now been identified and arrested.

In another case, a 79-year-old pensioner in Eching (Freising district), after calling false police officers and bank employees, gave a five-digit amount of money to pick up at her doorstep.

The investigators also brought the suspects into connection with other acts from all over Germany - especially in Hanover, in Pocking in Lower Bavaria (Passau district) and in the Saxon municipalities of Altenstein and Wurzen.

The public prosecutor's office in Regensburg obtained arrest warrants because of the urgent suspicion of commercial gang fraud.

According to the police, extensive evidence was found during the searches, three suspects were brought to various prisons in Schleswig-Holstein during the day, the fourth was to follow.

The investigators hope that the analysis of the seized evidence will provide further information on possible acts and, above all, on the masterminds they suspect abroad.
