Munich (dpa / lby) - The turnover of the Bavarian youth hostels fell by more than half last year.

The bookings of school classes have even decreased by 80 percent compared to the previous year, said the Bavarian Youth Hostel Association (DJH) on Thursday.

According to the association, more than 385,000 people stayed overnight in Bavarian youth hostels in 2020, compared with over a million overnight stays in the previous year.

This corresponds to a decrease of more than 61 percent.

The school classes in particular stayed away: only around 74,000 students stayed overnight in 2020, compared to almost 374,000 in the previous year.

According to the association, sales fell from more than 43 million to 18 million in the same period.

"Without the quick help in the summer of last year, the DJH would probably have threatened bankruptcy," said Klaus Umbach, President of the Bavarian Youth Hostel Association.

The ongoing lockdown is causing fears of the future in the 58 youth hostels in Bavaria.

Overnight stays must therefore be allowed as soon as possible, demanded Umbach.

“The youth hostels are well prepared for this;

if school can take place in presence again, then class trips too. "
