Potsdam (dpa / bb) - From 2011 to the end of 2020, 44 arson attacks with a political background were registered in Brandenburg.

According to police statistics, 25 attacks were attributed to right-wing extremist circles, 17 were assigned to left-wing crime, and the background of two offenses is unclear.

This emerges from the response of the Interior Ministry in Potsdam to a request from the AfD parliamentary group.

Four attacks were directed against buildings or vehicles belonging to state institutions.

The ministry did not provide details about the goals of the further arson attacks.

That there were clear differences in the severity of the offenses can be seen from the punishments for the accused.

Of 16 right-wing offenders, four received prison sentences of more than two years, one of which is not yet final.

Ten defendants received suspended sentences.

Another offender received a youth sentence of several years, another got away with a conditional warning.

In 16 cases of right-wing politically motivated crimes, the investigations were discontinued because there was, for example, insufficient suspicion to be charged.

Two of the 17 crimes that were assigned to the left-wing spectrum ended with suspended sentences, and investigations into an arson attack are still ongoing.

All other proceedings in this category have been discontinued.
