Erfurt (dpa / th) - The Erfurt Augustinian monastery celebrated a memorial service on Thursday evening with two new so-called crosses of nails.

The monastery’s original cross of nails was stolen last year.

The prayer on Thursday evening commemorated the 267 victims of the bombing raid on the monastery on February 25, 1945, and today's victims of war and violence.

The cross of nails is an internationally known symbol of peace and reconciliation.

It was once made from nails from the burned roof structure of the English cathedral in Coventry, which was destroyed by German bombers in 1940.

In July last year, the Cross of Reconciliation was stolen from the monastery memorial under circumstances that have not yet been clarified.

According to the information, inmates of the Würzburg correctional facility made the stolen cross of nails.

A new cross from the prison is now to be put up again in the "House of Reconciliation," said Prigge.

There was the cellar of the former monastery library, in which the victims had sought protection from the air raids shortly before the end of the Second World War in 1945.

The second new cross is a smaller one straight from Coventry.
