Potsdam (dpa / bb) - The Brandenburg state parliament has backed the new compromise on the construction of the Potsdam synagogue with a large majority - and warned of a new dispute.

Five of the six factions called on the state government on Thursday to conclude the planned agreement with the Central Council of Jews in Germany and to begin construction.

"The state parliament expects that the synagogue center will be open to all Jewish communities in the state capital after completion," it said.

The AfD parliamentary group voted against the joint proposal and called for the regional association of Jewish religious communities to be involved, which Culture Minister Manja Schüle (SPD) accuses of disempowerment.

After many years of dispute, the minister announced last week that the state would build the synagogue and community center with the Central Welfare Office for Jews in Germany.

A conflict has been simmering for over ten years, initially between the Jewish community and the synagogue community in Potsdam over the facade and use.

Last year there was a compromise between the state, the West Regional Association of Jewish Religious Communities and the Brandenburg State Association of Jewish Communities, which later failed.

Potsdam is the only state capital in Germany without a classic synagogue building.
