Oberstdorf (dpa) - No chance at home: The famous series of medals for German ski jumpers ended with a weak performance at the World Championships in Oberstdorf.

For the first time since 2013, the flying artists around local hero Katharina Althaus and Carina Vogt did not make it to the podium in the individual from the normal hill at a major event.

Vogt was even close to tears after the “debacle” she called herself and ranked 30th.

The cross-country skiers hadn't created a sensation either, so that the first day of the World Cup ended without a German medal.

Althaus took tenth place on the Schattenberg as the best German.

The Slovenian Ema Klinec secured the first ski jumping gold of the title fights in the Allgäu.

Silver went to Maren Lundby from Norway, bronze went to Sara Takanashi from Japan.

Despite the strong balance of previous years, a medal would have been a surprise for the team of national coach Andreas Bauer.

“It was clear that the series would break at some point.

It is of course a bit bitter that it is happening in Oberstdorf, »said Bauer.

So far, the Germans have not made it onto the podium this World Cup winter.

Many injuries threw the team back.

Vogt was particularly affected.

The 2014 Olympic champion from Sochi tore her cruciate ligament before last season and had repeatedly struggled with new knee injuries.

Jumps to 81 and 70 meters left the 29-year-old completely dejected and stunned.

"This sport is so beautiful and somehow so merciless," she said on ARD.

"It hurts a lot that it happens at a World Cup."

Althaus could not show her skills either.

The Allgäu, who was still confident after the unsuccessful qualification the day before, jumped only 91 and 98 meters.

After the first round, they separated 18 meters from the leader Marita Kramer, who set a hill record with her set of 109 meters.

Because of a failed landing in the second jump, the Austrian missed a medal in the end.

Her second jump, however, gave Althaus some hope.

She smiled again and spoke of "damage control".

Anna Rupprecht came in 14th, Juliane Seyfarth, who last attracted attention with a Playboy shoot, landed in 21st place.

As expected, the cross-country skiers also played no role in the battle for the podium at midday in bright sunshine.

Norway's cross-country star Johannes Kläbo set the first big World Cup highlight.

With a furious final sprint, the 24-year-old won the sprint safely in spring-like temperatures.

His two compatriots Erik Valnes and Haavard Solaas Taugböl completed the triple success.

In the women's category, local hero Laura Gimmler had reached the semi-finals as the best German athlete and was very happy with that.

For her, participating in her home country was “a childhood dream” and the surprisingly strong result was “the icing on the cake”.

Gold went to Jonna Sundling from Sweden.

On Friday, the athletes of the German Ski Association (DSV) have a chance to win precious metal in two competitions.

There could be reason to cheer both in the female jumpers' team with an increase in performance and in the Nordic combined athletes.
