Berlin (dpa / bb) - Interior Senator Andreas Geisel (SPD) has apologized to the victims of the right-wing extremist series of attacks in Neukölln.

"We have to keep asking ourselves critically whether we are dealing appropriately with the victims of violence and racism and discrimination," said Geisel on Thursday at the plenary session of the Berlin House of Representatives.

«And I answer quite frankly: No, unfortunately not always.

And we have to change that. "

The victims of the more than 70 attacks in Neukölln between 2016 and 2018 had the feeling that the state would not protect them sufficiently, said Geisel.

«Such a feeling must not arise in our country.

And I ask for forgiveness from the relatives of the victims, from those affected, that this feeling arose, ”said the SPD politician.

"It hits the investigators in the core, it hits me in the core of this accusation," said Geisel.

"The turning towards the victims, the empathy with the people who have to live with the consequences of the crime, unfortunately too often falls by the wayside."

The Senator for the Interior said that people were killed in the attack in Hanau a year ago because a racist did not understand that Germany was a society of diversity.

«Neukölln and Hanau cannot be compared with one another.

But let's not kid ourselves: It's only a small step from Neukölln to Hanau, ”said Geisel.

«The poison is called racism, exclusion, hatred, terror.

All of this creates uncertainty, traumatizes people and makes victims, ”said the SPD politician.

"You must have our full solidarity and support."
