The Burmese foreign minister appointed by the junta traveled to Bangkok on Wednesday February 24 to meet with regional powers.

The talks come as the toll of crackdown on protests against the February 1 coup has grown to five, as a local relief organization announced the death of a protester in custody.

The meeting took place in the discretion and nothing has filtered for the moment.

Wunna Maung Lwin spoke with her counterparts from Thailand and Indonesia during the first official meeting between a member of the junta and representatives of foreign governments.

Indonesia, do not support the dictator

"

A few days earlier, Indonesia had proposed that

ASEAN

send representatives to Burma to ensure that the generals keep their promises and hold elections in a year, recalls

our correspondent in Bangkok,

Carol Isoux

.

A proposal poorly received by Burmese activists who believe that the people have already clearly expressed themselves in the elections last November and that there is therefore no reason to leave the generals in power for a year.

Hundreds of protesters gathered on Wednesday for the second day in a row outside the Indonesian embassy in central Yangon, Myanmar's largest city, with signs saying "

Stop negotiating with them

" and "

Indonesia, don't support not the dictator

”.

For them, Asean should rather focus on facilitating talks between elected representatives of the National League for Democracy, Aung San Suu Kyi's party and the military.

But this compromise position, which would spare the generals and give them time to withdraw from power, seems for the moment to be the position favored by the countries of Southeast Asia, and behind them, China, the main one. commercial partner.
