Meiningen (dpa / th) - According to the district office, more than 1200 people have now used the offer of free corona rapid tests in the Schmalkalden-Meiningen district.

"The response is overwhelming," said the district administration on Thursday.

In the tests that have been running since Monday, nine corona infected people were discovered, whose test results were confirmed by additional PCR tests.

Infection chains could have been effectively broken in this way.

The Schmalkalden-Meiningen district has been Thuringia's number one corona hotspot for some time.

It is also one of the four counties worst hit by the pandemic nationwide.

The incidence value, which indicates the number of infections per 100,000 inhabitants within seven days, was 206.5 on Thursday.

According to the administration, the district incurs weekly costs of 25,000 euros for the rapid tests.

In view of this, District Administrator Peggy Greiser (independent) demanded reimbursement of costs by the federal government from March 1st.

Federal Minister of Health Jens Spahn (CDU) announced free rapid tests in a publicly effective manner.

Therefore, the district invokes the protection of legitimate expectations and demands the assumption of the costs incurred for the district, especially since the Thuringian Ministry of Health did not support the test campaign.

Nationwide free rapid tests are to be discussed at the upcoming federal-state consultations on the pandemic on March 3rd.
