Hanover (dpa / lni) - The municipalities in Lower Saxony continue to urge rapid support to revitalize the inner cities.

The Lower Saxony Association of Towns and Municipalities (NSGB) called on Thursday for a “restart program” of 50 million euros for small and medium-sized towns.

This would enable those involved on site to find solutions, said NSGB President Marco Trips.

"Our inner cities have suffered severe damage from the corona crisis," he said.

In addition, there would be problems from the growing online trade and considerable backlogs in the digitization of trade, city centers and administrations.

The state government promised financial support.

The Minister for Regional Development, Birgit Honé (SPD), said her house was working with the building ministry on an immediate program.

Subject to the approval of the EU Commission, this should comprise at least 100 million euros from EU funds for immediate Corona aid.

In the new EU funding period, there should also be another program to strengthen the inner cities.

Last week, the Lower Saxony City Council proposed an immediate program of 70 million euros for attractive and future-proof inner cities.

Among other things, vacant buildings should be rented and re-let more cheaply.
