Berlin (dpa / bb) - Berlin's Justice Senator Dirk Behrendt has called for decisive action by politics and society against racism, hatred and agitation.

The Green politician referred on Thursday in the House of Representatives to numerous attacks on people with a foreign background.

This shows: "Racism and misanthropy are omnipresent in Berlin."

If people are regularly insulted, spat at and injured for racist or misanthropic motives, it is unbearable.

"Hatred, racism and misanthropy have settled in very many heads - in too many," said Behrendt.

«Hatred, racism and misanthropy must be fought resolutely.

One year after the racist murders in Hanau, this is more true than ever. "

Because too many people would still be confronted with resentment and misanthropy.

"That is why we all have a responsibility to defend diversity, the open society and human rights," emphasized Behrendt.

The Senate has done a lot to achieve this.

Behrendt named the new commission of experts anti-Muslim racism or the state program against right-wing extremism, racism and anti-Semitism, within the framework of which the Senate supports almost 90 projects.

The central office for hate crime at the public prosecutor's office or the nationwide first state anti-discrimination law belonged to this series.

But the whole civil society is asked.

"Without the enormous commitment of Berliners, it would not be possible to defend the diversity in our city."
