Australian Ashleigh Barty (world No. 1) was beaten upon entering the tournament in Adelaide by American Danielle Collins (37th), victorious in straight sets 6-3, 6-4 and 65th minutes in this 2nd round match.

This is the first victory for Collins, quarter-finalist at Roland Garros last September, over Barty in three confrontations.

The Australian, recent quarter-finalist of the Australian Open and defending champion in Adelaide, got off to a good start by taking her opponent's first serve game to break away 3 games to 1.

But Barty, who had made her return to the circuit after an eleven-month absence due to the Covid-19 pandemic, was later betrayed by her service, which Collins took from her twice in that first round she took won 6-3.

Bis repeated in the second set, where Barty made a break from the start, before Collins "unbreaks" then "breaks" in his turn at 4-4 to conclude this meeting victoriously on his serve, in 1:05 min.

Danielle Collins, beaten in the semifinals of the 2020 edition of the tournament by ... Barty, will still have a big chunk in the quarterfinals in the person of the Polish Iga Swiatek.

The winner of the last Roland Garros made short work of Maddison Inglis, an Australian from qualifying, 6-1, 6-3.

The other big surprise of this second round was signed by the young American Coco Gauff (16 years old and 53rd), who got out of the qualifications to eliminate the Croatian Petra Martic (21st) 5-7, 6-3, 6 -4.
