Oberstdorf (dpa) - The Nordic World Ski Championships in Oberstdorf have officially opened.
Alfons Hörmann accepted the flag of the FIS World Federation at the opening ceremony as President of the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) on Wednesday evening and spoke at the opening of the championship competitions for ski jumpers, cross-country skiers and Nordic combined athletes, which will last until March 7th.
FIS President Gian Franco Kasper was supposed to open the competitions, but the program was changed at short notice on Wednesday for reasons that were initially unknown.
Oberstdorf's mayor, Klaus King, had previously emphasized the hope that due to the special corona circumstances, a World Cup could soon take place in the Allgäu again.
The earliest possible time for this would be 2027, as the title fights in 2023 (Planica) and 2025 (Trondheim) have already been awarded.
"You can feel every day that the chances of a bonus World Cup are increasing," said Horst Hüttel, Germany's team manager for the ski jumping and Nordic combined divisions.
