Cottbus (dpa) - The energy company Leag wants to expand its pilot project for the cultivation of hemp in Lusatia this year.

For the cultivation of hemp, three times as much space should now be available, as the Lausitz opencast mine operator announced on Wednesday.

The project, which was started in 2020 together with farmers from the region, is intended to open up new business areas in the open-cast mining region.

First, the hemp was grown on a total of almost eight hectares on the edge of the Reichwalde opencast mines in Saxony and Jänschwalde in Brandenburg.

Now the area is to be expanded to a total of 25 hectares and the three previously tried and tested hemp varieties are to be supplemented by more.

The “Lusatia Sativa” brand (Lusatian hemp) sells hemp oil and chocolate made from hemp.

Until the next harvest, the use of hemp fibers for industrial products should also be examined and expanded, it said.
