Yesterday, Italian Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio announced that Rome is asking the United Nations to open an investigation and provide "clear responses" after the Italian ambassador to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Luca Atanazio, was killed in an attack on the convoy of the World Food Program.

"We have formally requested the World Food Program and the United Nations to open an investigation to clarify the circumstances of what happened, the reasons justifying the security arrangements used, and who bears the responsibility for these decisions," Di Maio said.

He added, "We also explained that we are waiting for clear and comprehensive responses as soon as possible."

Ambassador Luca Atanazio (43 years) died of his bullet wounds while he was in a car as part of a convoy of the World Food Program, which was ambushed in North Kivu (east) near the border with Rwanda, and his bodyguard, Italian Vittorio Yakovaci, and the Congolese driver for the World Food Program were also killed. Mustafa Milambo.

Di Maio added, "We are awaiting an in-depth report from the agency on every useful element regarding the visit program, and the security measures that were adopted to protect the delegation."

He added that the ambassador could have decided on his own way of traveling in the country, but organizing this visit to the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo is the responsibility of the World Food Program.

He said, "The mission took place at the invitation of the United Nations, and therefore the car route also took place within the framework of the planned organization of the World Food Program."

He confirmed that the Roma prosecutor had opened an investigation and would send a team of investigators belonging to a special body of the gendarmerie. Di Maio added: "As far as I know, there are other teams that will follow him."
