Koblenz (dpa / lrs) - In what, according to the Federal Prosecutor's Office, is the world's first criminal trial for state torture in Syria, the Koblenz Higher Regional Court sentenced one of the two defendants to four and a half years in prison on Wednesday.

According to the conviction of the judges, the Syrian Eyad A. was guilty of aiding and abetting a crime against humanity (Az. 1 StE 9/19).

The 44-year-old who fled to Germany and arrested here was an agent of the state general secret service in Syria.

The court was convinced that he was an accessory to crimes such as torture and deprivation of liberty.

The trial started in April 2020 against the Syrian main defendant Anwar R. (58) is set to continue.
